Written by Rev. M. T. Runnels, A. M., and published by Mudge & Son, Printers in Boston in 1873, this work covers the Runnels and Reynolds families in America. The author, a pastor in Sanbornton, New Hampshire, records the descendants of three main ancestors and other related branches of the family.
The book is organised into three parts, each a genealogical memoir of a specific ancestor: Samuel Runels, Job Runels, and John Runels. It includes an appendix with notices on other Reynolds and Runnels families across New England, Maine, and Massachusetts, followed by a roll of honour and two indexes.

From page 193
It is quite certain, as shown in the former Introductions, that the ancestors Job and John, of Parts II and III, respectively, were brothers. There is also a tradition in one branch of the family of Samuel (Part I), that one of his two younger brothers who followed him to New England, " remained near him for a time " in Bradford, or Boxford, Mass., " before finally settling in New Hampshire; " that he " lived on the other side of the pond" (from his brother's), and that he " spelled his name differently." It seems probable that Samuel [I] may have had a brother John, from the circumstance of his giving that name to two of his male children, [4] and [5], Part 1, and that the two brothers may have been living near each other at the time of those children's births.
Questions about this book
Who were the three main ancestors featured in the book?
The three ancestors whose genealogical memoirs form the core of the work are Samuel Runels (1703 to 1745), Job Runels or Runals (1713 to 1762), and John Runels or Runals (1718 to 1756). Their descendants are traced through consecutive numbers and pedigrees in the main body of the text.
What is the suspected origin of the Runnels family?
Tradition among the descendants of John says that his family originated in Ayrshire. This points to a Scottish origin for John and his older brother Job, from before their grandfather settled in Nova Scotia. The author finds it quite certain that Job and John were brothers.
How should a searcher find a specific person in the book?
A reader should consult Index No. 1, where all the Christian names are arranged alphabetically. The year of birth, when known, comes before each name, and the number after it leads to the place in the main body of the book where the person is first entered as a child.
